Can you drive without an MOT? The rules, the fines and the one exception

By M D Auto Care, Aylesbury. 13 October 2026. 3 minute read.

No, you cannot legally drive a car on the road without a valid MOT, apart from two situations: driving it to a pre-booked MOT test, and driving it to a garage to have faults fixed after a fail. Outside of those, you can be fined up to £1,000.

That is the short version. The detail matters, because the rules on dangerous faults are much harsher than the rules on a simple missed date.

The two times you can drive without an MOT

  • To a pre-booked MOT test. The booking has to exist before you set off, so make it first and keep the confirmation.
  • To or from a garage for repairs that are being done because the car failed its MOT.

In both cases the car still has to be roadworthy. An expired MOT does not excuse a car with bald tyres or failing brakes.

What the fine is

Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. That is for the missing certificate alone.

Your insurance is the bigger worry. Many policies expect the car to hold a current MOT, so if you have an accident and the certificate has expired, the insurer may argue about paying out. Check your policy wording, or ask your insurer, if you are unsure.

A dangerous fault is a different matter

If your car fails its MOT with a fault marked dangerous, it should not be driven at all, other than as the rules allow to get it repaired. Driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition can mean a fine of up to £2,500, three penalty points and a driving ban.

That can apply even when the old MOT is still valid. The certificate only tells you what the car was like on the day of the test. You are responsible for keeping it safe every day after that.

What to do if you have missed the date

  1. Do not use the car for ordinary journeys.
  2. Book the test first, so that driving to it is legal.
  3. Bring the car straight to the garage, and take no detours.
  4. If it fails, have the repairs done and the retest carried out. If you leave it with us, the retest is free within 10 working days.

Do not let it get that far

The easy fix is a reminder. Put your MOT date in your calendar a month ahead. Our guide to when your MOT is due shows how to check it and how early you can test without losing your renewal date.
