MOT

MOT or service: what is the difference, and which does your car need?

By M D Auto Care, Aylesbury. 13 October 2026. 2 minute read.

An MOT is a legal check that your car is safe enough to be on the road on the day it is tested. A service is maintenance: oil, filters and checks that keep the car healthy and reliable between tests. They are different jobs, and passing one tells you nothing about the other.

Plenty of drivers believe an MOT means the car has been looked after. It does not, and that confusion is expensive. Here is the difference in plain English.

What an MOT is

It is a test set by law, carried out once a year after the car is three years old. The tester checks the safety and environmental items, such as lights, brakes, steering, tyres and emissions, against a minimum standard.

It does not replace the oil, and it does not look at the engine, clutch or gearbox. Our guide to what is checked in an MOT has the full list.

What a service is

A service is the maintenance your manufacturer recommends. At a minimum it is an oil and filter change and a set of checks. A bigger one adds the air, fuel and pollen filters, spark plugs, brake fluid and more, depending on the car.

No law makes you service a car. But a car that is not serviced wears faster, uses more fuel and is worth less when you sell it, and if it is under warranty the manufacturer's schedule needs to be followed. Our guide to how often to service a car gives the intervals.

Side by side

  • MOT: a legal requirement. Service: advice you are free to ignore, at your cost.
  • MOT: checks safety on one day. Service: replaces parts that wear and checks the rest.
  • MOT: pass or fail. Service: a list of work done, and a record in the service book.
  • MOT: once a year. Service: usually once a year or by mileage, whichever comes first.

Should I do both at once?

Many people do, and it makes sense. You are without the car once, the service often finds things the MOT would have flagged, and any repairs can be done before the test so there is no retest to worry about.

If you are close to your MOT date, ask us for both when you book online.

Quick answers

Is an MOT the same as a service?

No. An MOT is a legal safety check on the day. A service is maintenance that keeps the car healthy.

Does a service include an MOT?

Not unless it is booked as well. They are separate jobs, though they can be done in one visit.

Do I have to service my car by law?

No, but you do have to keep it roadworthy, and a warranty can depend on a service history.

Which should I do first?

If both are due, doing the service first often means fewer surprises at the test.
