Why are my brakes squealing or grinding? What it means and what to do

By M D Auto Care, Aylesbury. 13 October 2026. 2 minute read.

A squeal when you brake is often the wear indicator telling you the pads are getting low. It is a warning, not yet an emergency. A grinding noise is different: it usually means the pads are gone and metal is rubbing on metal, which damages the discs and makes the car much less safe.

Either way, brakes are not something to put off. Here is how to tell the sounds apart.

What each noise usually means

  • High-pitched squeal: the wear indicator on the pad is touching the disc. Book it in soon.
  • Squeal that fades after the first few stops on a damp morning: often just moisture or light rust on the discs.
  • Grinding or a harsh metallic scraping: the friction material is worn through. Stop driving it if you can, and get it looked at urgently.
  • A rhythmic judder through the pedal or steering wheel: warped or uneven discs.
  • Clicking or knocking: loose or worn parts, such as a pad that is not sitting properly.

Other signs it is time

  • The pedal feels soft, spongy or travels further than it used to.
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake.
  • The brake warning light on the dash.
  • It takes longer to stop than it did.
  • A burning smell after a hard stop.

How long do pads last?

Anywhere from around 20,000 to 65,000 miles, and more or less depending on how and where you drive. Town driving with lots of stopping wears them quicker than motorway miles. Rear pads often last about twice as long as the fronts.

A visual check once a year, or at each service, is the reliable way to know, because mileage is only a guide.

Why not leave it

Pads are cheap. Discs are not. Once the pad is gone, the disc gets scored and often needs replacing too, and in the worst case the brakes stop working properly. Brakes are also one of the most common reasons for a failed MOT, and a likely source of dangerous faults.

Our repairs service covers pads, discs, fluid and calipers, and we will show you the worn parts so you can see for yourself.

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?

Usually for a short time, but get them checked soon. If the noise is grinding, do not carry on.

Why do my brakes squeal in the morning?

Often moisture and a thin layer of rust on the discs. It should fade after a few stops. If it does not, have them checked.

Should I replace pads and discs together?

Not always. Discs are only replaced when they are worn or damaged. We will measure and tell you.

How much do brake pads cost to replace?

It depends on the car and the parts. Call us with the make and model and we will give you a quote.
